Q & A

Why LEAN?

Lean is a philosophy, a way of life. It is a set of principles, concepts and techniques that lead to continuous improvement. The focus is on continuous elimination of non value adding activities. Lean means changing the work environment in order to optimize performance, quality and safety.

Is LEAN useful in the food industry?

Sure! While the origins of Lean lie in the automotive industry, and some techniques within the Lean toolbox may be less suitable to other environments, the Lean concepts and principles are perfectly applicable in the food industry.

How long does a typical LEAN transition take?

See your Lean implementation as a long trip … It is not something you start today with a specific date in mind. Toyota pioneered lean 40 years ago, and they say it’s still not ready… But that doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve a lot in a span of 6 to 12 months.

Which one is first? Lean of Six Sigma?

Lean and Six Sigma are two different philosophies, but are extremely compatible. Six Sigma is based on statistical tools to reduce variation (and thus defects), while Lean focuses on eliminating waste (among other defects).

We are happily surprised by the performance analysis made by Lean4Food in such a short time frame. This was only possible by intensely involving our staff in the project, but without pulling them away from their daily workspace.
The identified improvement potential is often a confirmation of what we already felt ourselves, but the potential gains are finally quantified and we are able to, on this basis, to draw up focused action plans.

If you cannot explain it in a simple way, you don’t understand it well enough (Einstein)
